Ozian Highlights

I'm very sorry for not updating my blog for a little while but life has been pretty hectic. I spent most of my remaining time in Brisbane working at the hotel I mentioned. It was an okay job. The people there were really nice and the pay was awesome but some of the guests were kinda crazy and way high maintenance. If I was a permanent Brissy resident it would've been a good job but I hated Brisbane so much that I'm glad not to be working there any more. The only really memorable thing about that last month in Brisbane was River Fire. It's a huge firework show held throughout the entire city to the cheesiest music medley imaginable. Of course Katy Perry featured in it which was rather unoriginal but I think my favourite part was the Black Eyed Peas remixed with The Simpsons. It was hilarious!
Other than that there wasn't really anything remarkable to report, just the usual; going out, watching movies, going to the park etc. I did decide that my favourite Cold Rocks ice cream creation so far was chocolate gelato with cookie dough. That was super tasty. I have yet to go to the local Cold Rocks in Surfers Paradise but I'm certain I'll discover some more yummy creations before my Oz time is over.
Life is better on the Gold Coast. For one thing I have a nice tan going on, although in my first week I was definitely more lobster coloured than sun-kissed. I also love my job at Dreamworld. I still only work two rides so it's a bit frustrating but it's so much fun and I love the perks!
Other than working I've been having a good time. Apart from the time spent sun-bathing I've been to the Hard Rock Cafe with Kate a bunch of times, Byron Bay with the guys from my hostel twice (the first time I was dumb enough to hike through the rainforest up to the lighthouse in flip-flops; the second time I went in the van) and then there was my favourite excursion to go see the glow worms!  We went to the Natural Bridge National Park (and again had to trek through a rainforest but this time in Converse) to a dark cave full of glow worms. They were so pretty. Like stars but closer. I think we should build a glow worm cave in the back garden for when I get home!
Well, I hope you're all feeling caught up now. I'll try to be a more frequent blogger in the future for you all. Ciao!

  1. Hi Sarah
Very pleased to see an update - I'm relying on you for my education about Australia! Glad it's going well at Dreamworld, and I love the idea of an excursion to see glow worms, that does sound incredible (I can't really see them at Cemetery Road, however!). And I'm very pleased you've chosen your favourite ice-cream flavour - I was missing your updates about ice-cream!

Things are good with us, we enjoyed our visit to Mexborough recently, it was lovely to see everyone and to be back Up North. I liked going over to Wentworth Hall as well, it's a beautiful house and lovely village - and me and Gail working together managed to drag Pete and Dan into the Garden Centre and even (I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes!) into the xmas decorations department! I was in heaven! They were selling a book there as well all about the history of Wentworth House and its highs and lows, so I'm asking for that for xmas from your mum and dad - I can't wait.

Talking of books, have you had much time in your busy life for reading and if so what have you got on the go at the moment? I'm reading The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova - I loved The Historian that she did, this isn't as page-turning as that but is still good. I could have moved into your bedroom with your huge book collection and lived there happily ever after!

Oh, and Ricky Whittle, eh? I'd never heard of him before, but I've dealt with your xmas pressie request of his calendar - I was a bit shocked, though, does the man not get chilly going around half naked?! (I'm sure it's his intelligent conversation you're interested in!)

Anyway, have a good week, lots of love, Jo (and your bro!) xxx

  2. Hey Jo,

Glad you enjoyed your time in Mexborough. I think you should youtube Ricky Wittle when he was on Strictly Come Dancing and then you'd understand!

I'm currently reading Grimus by Salman Rushdie. It's the first thing I've ever read of his. It's okay but only read a couple of chapters so far. I can' believe you liked the Historian though. I hated it!

  3. Hi Sarah
Many thanks for the birthday postcard - and thank you for the news about the warmth and sunshine, can vaguely remember what that felt like! Glad things are still going ok for you out there and you're still enjoying your job.

Do you have any plans for xmas day? Will you do the traditional Aussie thing and have a BBQ on the beach? I think you should.

I have posted out a xmas card to you, hopefully it will arrive ok. I will look after the Ricky calender here for your return (I suppose really I should look at him every day for you - a sacrifice I'd be willing to make!).

    Merry xmas, love Jo xxx
